One promising potential solution to transportation in smart cities involves the use of electrically powered autonomous vehicles (“PODs”). In one scenario, these could be developed as driverless, six-seat vehicles that would run 24/7 over hundreds of miles of tracks, traveling at high speeds throughout a city. To keep the system operational and eliminate any downtime for electrical charging, each “passenger POD” would be charged “in flight” by a separate vehicle known as a “charging POD.”
